Madeleine Durham
Thursday May 2 and Friday May 3, 2019

Madeleine’s Paste Papers are a unique creation and a brilliant way to add a fresh and original look to your creative book art, collage, and calligraphy creations.  In this two day workshop you will learn the brush technique that Madeleine has developed over the last many years.  You will learn what kind of brush works best and how to hold it so that you create a variety of lines, shapes, and patterns.  You will also learn tricks for blending colors. You will leave the class with a basic knowledge and ability to create straight lines, wavy lines, subtle blending techniques and geometric patterns.  We will dive into painting with paste right away with simple lines and colors and quickly proceed to more complex patterns, colors and fun magical techniques.

With two days to play you will have more time to experiment and practice on a variety of papers, including some Japanese Papers, while narrowing in and perfecting your favorite patterns. Madeleine’s paste paper technique is delightfully spontaneous.  Come to class ready to have fun!

Materials fee $54 includes

  • Quality practice paper, usually a Superfine Cotton #70lb or comparable.
  • 10 sheets of Arches Text Wove approx 10” x 13” (=2.5 parent sheets)
  • A variety of Japanese Papers
  • One brush for you to take home. Extras available at $12.00
  • Wheat Paste for use in class.
  • Sheet of Mylar for working on which you can take home.
  • Golden Acrylic Paints series 1, 2, and 3.

Please feel free to bring papers to experiment on. Pages from interesting old books are often wonderful to work on. Papers that will hold up to being dipped in water are best.
